today in the Posers, Fakers and Wannabes book that was pretty topical for today’s conservatives. Also read George Will’s column about the “Values Voters” and it seemed to fit as well.
We so often hear politicians refer to themselves as compassionate or ‘compasstionate conservative’ as they go about trying to win an election so that they can increase their power base. It that sounds cynical, it is because it is, I’ve come to the conclusion that all politicians are just crooks in a “respectable” type of work. Here is the perfect quote for one of these clowns:
Take a look at a rose. Is it possible for the rose to say, “I’ll offer my fragrance to good people and withhold it from bad people”? Or can you imagine a lamp that withholds its rays from a wicked person who seeks to walk in its light? It could do that only by ceasing to be a lamp. And observe how helplessly and indiscriminately a tree gives its shade to everyone, good and bad, young and old, high and low, to animals and humans and every living creature – even to the one who seeks to cut it down. This is the first quality of coompassion – its indiscrminate character.
I especially like the line “It could do that only by ceasing to be a lamp.”. In other words, if you withhold your compassion from some, you must not define yourself as compassionate. Ask yourself, do you truly fit the definition of compassion as defined above? If not, then you need work my friend. As do I, so off I go. Late.
