Earlier this week

I was engaged in conversation regarding my position that there is no need, nor basis in the Bible for, Christians organizing politically. I was, of course, attacked for this position on several fronts by fellow believers who have, IMHO, been deceived by false teachers and have not read the Bible for themselves. Funny thing is, as I was studying in preparation for our class discussion tomorrow, I came across a quote by, of all people, the founder of the Quaker church. Although Quakers are pacifists and are against all war, this particular quote is about the very thing I was trying (hopelessly) to say about Christians, politics and forced majority rule.

All that pretend to fight for the gospel are deceived; for the gospel is the power of God, which was before the devil or fall of man was: and the gospel of peace was before fighting was. Therefore they that pretend fighting, and talk of fighting so, are ignorant of the gospel. All that talk of fighting for Sion are in darkness: Sion needs no such helpers.

This quote is taken from a writing by George Fox in 1658. Isn’t it interesting that, as Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 1:9, there is nothing new under the sun? Better yet, look at the entire quote:

1:9 What exists now is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done;
there is nothing truly new on earth.
1:10 Is there anything about which someone can say, “Look at this! It is new!”?
It was already done long ago, before our time.
1:11 No one remembers the former events,
nor will anyone remember the events that are yet to happen;
they will not be remembered by the future generations.

And it is so true! Everyday, we try to reinvent the wheel, to do things that have proven ineffective, to ignore the teachings of Jesus, to do things OUR WAY! Why? Because we cannot grasp the simple truth of grace, the simple, universal truth that God loves all of His creation, be they Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, homosexuals, war-mongers, pacifists, ALL! We do not need to organize politically! We need to live as Christ!
