I found a rather

interesting letter here about addiction. One of the better descriptions around, he talks about hope knowing that most will succomb to the despair of their addiction. One of the best portrayals of addiction I’ve ever read is the character Helen in Dekker’s When Heaven Weeps. In one scene, she is returning to her dealer/pimp/sexual partner/gang leader and she realizes what she is doing, as if viewing the scene from outside her body, yet continues anyway. This book should be required reading at all detox centers as far as I’m concerned.

The sad truth is that most of us often repeat behaviors that we know will result in negative outcomes. Whether it is substance abuse, verbal abuse, failure to release control, obsessive control, whatever, we will repeat it over and over again, thinking the results will be different. Late.
