vacation trip to LA to see the in-laws. Mini though it was. SU and I picked Pop up around 8 yesterday morning and headed east on I-10 to the big city of Opelousas. Is there a worse highway to travel on in the US than the stretch of I-10 from Houston to New Orleans? If there is, I haven’t found it.
Fortunately, we only had to travel it as far as Lafayette, then turned north up to the big city. Arrived just before noon, in time for lunch at the Palace Café. Their chicken and sausage gumbo is to die for.
That place has been there forever, I think I remember reading on the menu since 1927. That is a long time. And they have excellent food, even if the pace is a bit slower than we are used to in the really big city.
Headed to Pop’s Uncle Earl’s after that for a short visit. He’s 92 now and still supporting his oldest son (druggie) and youngest daughter (47 year old Down’s child) at home. He’s had to hire someone to come in and look after them for a half day but still in remarkable shape for his age. Met his daughter Susan for the first time, she’s only a few years older than me.
From there we headed to his brother’s home, my Uncle Bruce. Had a nice chat for an hour or so, then his other brother Trent came by. Hung out for another hour or so, and then headed to the hotel to get settled. What a rip, $125/night for a dumpy Best Western. Casino’s and horse track have blown prices out of sight.
Went to dinner with Bruce and his wife at a place called Soileux’s (swallows). Sign said they’d been there 70 years. Best fried chicken I’ve had in a long, long time. SU’s shrimp were good too. J
Home this morning west on 190 to Ragsdale, then 12 to Beaumont. Much, much easer drive. Just took our time and enjoyed the view, beats the heck out of I-10.

Your trip sounds great….. and to have your great uncle so spry…. wonderful. I love reading about your bible study class and am jealous. You and SU didn’t miss much in the blogworld…….. same stuff, different day.
