movie last night, The Marine. I don’t think that it was made to be funny but it surely was. Bad acting, cheesy plot, age old jokes, lots of shoot’em ups and explosions, babeinskis fighting, it was way cool! Didn’t realize until after viewing it that it was a WWE production by Vince McMahon. That accounts for all the huge dudes in it. Got it out of the Redbox because Netflix is getting slower and slower at receiving and shipping movies. Miss the trial period customer service.
Learn something new every day. Apparently, most people don’t click on the links provided in a blog post, just read the quoted portion and form opinions from that. I always click the links and read the stories, so I just assumed everyone else does that. But it isn’t the case, as I should have figured out a while back on LST when there was a complete thread of comments made on a post I authored before someone pointed out that I had messed the links up! He wondered how anyone could comment before reading the article. Funny.
So SU reads my comment on Dobson and tells me that I overreacted to it and overstated what he said. I ask her if she read the article and she tells me no, that is when I realize most people aren’t like me. Just as when ericj and emmekelley didn’t know who Dobson was – to me EVERYONE knows who he is because he’s in my universe. Epiphany.
So for SU, here is a large portion of the article verbatim:
Focus on the Family founder James Dobson appeared to throw cold water on a possible presidential bid by former Sen. Fred Thompson while praising former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is also weighing a presidential run, in a phone interview Tuesday.
“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.
Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Thompson, took issue with Dobson’s characterization of the former Tennessee senator. “Thompson is indeed a Christian,” he said. “He was baptized into the Church of Christ.”
In a follow-up phone conversation, Focus on the Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger stood by Dobson’s claim. He said that, while Dobson didn’t believe Thompson to be a member of a non-Christian faith, Dobson nevertheless “has never known Thompson to be a committed Christian—someone who talks openly about his faith.”
“We use that word—Christian—to refer to people who are evangelical Christians,” Schneeberger added. “Dr. Dobson wasn’t expressing a personal opinion about his reaction to a Thompson candidacy; he was trying to ‘read the tea leaves’ about such a possibility.”
Perhaps, maybe perhaps, one could say that he’s only saying that Mr. Thompson isn’t one of “our” Christians, thus leaving open the possibility that he might be some other type of Christian. For me, that is even worse. There is only one Church, one Body of Christ.
Thanks for saving me from having to read the link. As far as Dr. Dobson goes, I really don’t care what he thinks about politics and politicians. I also don’t care that he is so stupid as to try and judge for himself whether someone is a christian or not. I will leave that to God.
As for other christians out there, surely we are able to use the brain God gave us and don’t need a “Christian Leader” to tell us who to vote for or try to “read tea leaves”. I truly don’t know what Dr. Dobson is thinking.
